What Is Religious Deconstruction?

Religious deconstruction is the process of critically examining the beliefs, teachings, and systems you were raised in or once followed.

For many people, this can involve:

  • Letting go of fear-based teachings (hell anxiety, purity culture, etc.)

  • Re-evaluating identity, values, and meaning

  • Processing grief, anger, or confusion

  • Rebuilding a sense of self outside of rigid belief systems

This process can be freeing, but also disorienting, isolating, and emotionally intense.

You Might Be Experiencing…

  • Anxiety or panic tied to religious teachings

  • Fear of punishment, hell, or “getting it wrong”

  • Guilt or shame that feels hard to shake

  • Loss of community or identity

  • Strained family relationships

  • Difficulty trusting your own thoughts or decisions

You may feel like you’re losing so much… or like you’re finally waking up.

Both can be true.

My Approach to Religious Deconstruction Therapy

I believe in mindful, grounded, and evidence-based approach that centers your autonomy, values, and lived experience without imposing belief systems onto you. I primarily utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which is a fantastic evidence-based alternative to CBT for folks who have tried therapy before but still experience chronic depression and/or anxiety symptoms.

People are allowed to change, evolve, and change their minds. In fact, that’s healthy and demonstrates psychological flexibility. Deconstruction can sometimes result in unexpected transformation, and that’s exciting!

Your therapy will:

  • Focus on your goals, not predetermined answers

  • Respect your right to define meaning on your own terms

  • Use proven methods like:

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

    • Trauma-informed care

  • Create space for curiosity, questioning, and uncertainty

This is a place where you don’t have to defend your thoughts or be guided back into a belief system you’re trying to understand or move away from.
