Mental Health Evaluations and Surgery Letters for Gender-Affirming Care
If you need a mental health evaluation or support letter for gender-affirming surgery, I provide affirming, respectful pre-surgical evaluations for adults across Kansas via telehealth. I believe gender-affirming care should be approached with dignity, autonomy, and respect… not unnecessary gatekeeping. My goal is to provide a supportive evaluation process that helps meet your surgical program’s requirements while honoring your lived experience and identity. Whether you are early in your transition journey or have been pursuing gender-affirming care for years, I strive to make this process clear, collaborative, and as low-stress as possible.

My Approach to Gender-Affirming Evaluations
I aim to provide evaluations that are:
LGBTQIA+ affirming
Compliant with WPATH standards of care
Trans-affirming and nonjudgmental
Collaborative rather than adversarial
Trauma-informed
Neurodiversity-affirming
Respectful of your autonomy and self-knowledge
I recognize that many transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals have experienced discrimination, pathologization, or harmful gatekeeping in healthcare settings. My goal is to offer a process that feels safer, more respectful, and clinically competent.
Gender-Affirming Surgery Evaluations in Kansas
-
Many surgeons and insurance companies require a mental health evaluation or readiness letter before approving gender-affirming surgery. These evaluations are often used to document:
Gender dysphoria or clinically relevant distress, when required
Capacity for informed consent
Emotional readiness for surgery
Understanding of surgical risks, benefits, and recovery
Mental health stability and support systems
Ability to participate in post-operative care
These evaluations are not intended to judge whether your identity is “valid” or whether you are “trans enough.” Instead, the evaluation helps document information that many medical systems still require prior to surgery.
-
The evaluation typically includes a structured clinical interview and may include screening tools when clinically appropriate.
During the appointment, we may discuss:
Your gender identity and transition history
Goals for surgery
Mental health history
Current coping and support systems
Surgical expectations and recovery planning
After the evaluation, I prepare your letter or clinical documentation based on your surgical program’s requirements.
-
The fee for a gender-affirming surgery evaluation is $300 and includes a 100-minute (1 hour 40 minute) evaluation appointment, clinical documentation, and preparation of your surgery readiness letter.
Because this is a specialized evaluation service rather than ongoing psychotherapy, gender-affirming surgery evaluations are not covered by insurance and are private pay only.
Payment is due at the time of service unless other arrangements are discussed in advance.
